Join the war on waste this Plastic Free July

As Plastic Free July launches its 10th year of fighting the war against single-use plastics, residents in Orange can learn more about how to take part in the month-long challenge or take inspiration from local waste champions.

Orange City Council is taking an active interest in Plastic Free July, by showcasing the efforts of local stores and waste champions to discover if they can live without plastic for a month.

The journey of waste in Orange will also be highlighted, from the moment it is placed in the bin, and beyond. Videos posted on Council’s Facebook page/website each week during July will detail these processes and encourage residents to make simple switches to cut down on single-use plastics.

Their Facebook page will also feature a range of Plastic Free July-related resources throughout the month, from documentary recommendations and waste-free recipes, to Plastic Free July success stories and an at-home waste audit tool.

Orange City Council’s Environmental Sustainability Committee chair Cr Mario Previtera said he looks forward to seeing members of the community make the most of the month long challenge.

“I encourage the local community to get involved by either taking up the Plastic Free July challenge, or keeping an ear to the ground during this time to see what our local waste heroes are doing, and consider what steps your household can take towards promoting a more sustainable future.”

Started in Perth in 2010, Plastic Free July is a globally popular sustainability-focused initiative, encouraging people around the world to think about their attitude towards plastic use, particularly single-use plastics, and find sustainable alternatives.
