Let’s walk and talk!
Moderate, regular exercise is one of the best things any of us can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but it is certainly easier with friends.
“None of us knew each other before this though,” said Lee Hedberg, who helps coordinate the Active Baby Boomers Orange NSW.
Now running for more than two years, Active Baby Boomers Orange NSW is simply a group that meet up every Friday for a weekly walk. It grew out of a program to encourage people over 55 to try different activities.
“We decided that everyone loved walking and that's what’s remained the Friday morning walk,” said Lee.
The group now has more than 50 members with up 20 taking part in a walk each week.
“It is a lovely opportunity to get out on a Friday morning and take a walk,” said Lee.
“None of us in the group knew each other before this, so we are very welcoming to anyone who wants to come along and meet some likeminded people, have a lovely walk, enjoy the outdoors and then come together for a coffee afterwards.”
The walk location varies from week to week, with members meeting at 8.50am for a 9am start — a little bit later in the winter months.
“We simply decide the week before where we are going to meet and twice a week, we put a post on Facebook to remind people of where the location is and then we put an email out to those on the email list,” said Lee.
“It usually takes about an hour. It is not a group for people who like a really brisk walk, it is a group for people who like to have a reasonable walk and a chat and meet new people.
“It is such a relaxed group, there is no stress and no compulsion to tell people whether you are coming or not. Dogs are welcome; some people bring their grandchildren during school holidays, we welcome anyone.”
