“Very humbled”: Paula Townsend named 2024 Local Woman of the Year
Bowen Community Technology Centre’s (CTC) founder and hardworking champion Paula Townsend has been named Orange’s 2024 Local Woman of the Year.
For 17 years, Paula has quietly filled a seemingly small, but vitally important, need in the community; making sure those who need it have free access to computers, internet, and printing and being there to provide a helping hand to local kids and adults.
“It's one of the best parts of my job as a local member; acknowledging people like Paula who's done an amazing job here for many, many years,” said Member for Orange Phil Donato, as he presented Paula with her award last week.
“There are lots of people who have opinions about how to tackle big issues in our community, but there are only a few people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and put plans into action – and even fewer still who are willing to sacrifice their time and effort for the betterment of the community,” he said.
At the CTC, Paula provides a safe and welcoming space for kids and adults, he said, helping with everything from school homework to job applications and more, Mr Donato said.
“The improvement and the difference they have made in so many people's lives, you know you can't measure that,” he said.
“Providing this safe-space for kids to come after school. To be able to have a snack, sit at a computer, do some homework, be supervised by Paula and her team… a lot of these kids may not have that at home.
“Helping someone who doesn't have access to the computer or can't type to be able to apply for a job and to see that person then get a job — that's a game changer. That changes lives. I mean, you can't quantify that but that's the reality of the situation,” Mr Donato continued.
“She's left a big mark on this local community and I'm so honoured to be able to present Paula with this award.”
Overwhelmed by the attention, Paula said she felt very humbled to have been given the award considering all the other women who do amazing things in Orange.
“I'm really actually honoured,” said Paula. “There's so many wonderful women in the community that to be nominated and receive this award… It's a fantastic feeling to know that people think I do OK work.”
More than a job, the CTC is a real passion for Paula, who has seen many times just how much of a difference it can make for the people who seek her help.
“It feels wonderful to help a person get a job. It feels wonderful to help a person sort out their financial things and we do all of that sort of stuff. It's the best feeling in the world and I've got the greatest position in the world!” said Paula.
I don't think people realise that not everybody has a computer, not everybody reads, not everybody can write, not everybody can type, some people need that help and that's what we're here for.
“I hope it continues in the future long, long after I've gone.”
Paula will join Member for Orange Phil Donato at the NSW Women of the Year Awards held on March 4 at the International Convention Centre, Sydney.
