‘I Just Want to Be’: Megan Woods’ rockin’ new single out now

Local singer, songwriter and mother of two, Megan Woods, has just released her second single, the rocky ‘I Just Want to Be’.

Megan’s music blends a variety of influences, including Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, Dolly Parton, The Chicks, and Sheryl Crow to create a sound that is uniquely her own.

After a transformative experience performing in a Melissa Etheridge tribute show, Megan found her inner rock chick and formed a band called The Noisy Boys to support her musical vision. With raw energy, big powerful vocals, and a driving groove, Megan's music captivates listeners, while her sweet touch adds depth and emotion.

She sees the new single ‘I Just Want to Be’ as a rock anthem for everyone dealing with life’s many stressors.

“You know, as a mother and a wife, life is busy and sometimes you just want to have a minute to yourself — whether it’s just a minute to breathe, or to go out with your girlfriends, or a date night. It’s about letting loose and being free, and forgetting all those things you just have to do,” Megan said.

“I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to this song, in a lot of different ways.”

With her powerful voice and magnetic stage presence, Megan has earned widespread acclaim. In November 2022 she earnt two awards at the Dotted Eight Music Awards, including 'The People's Choice’.

Megan made the move from New Zealand ten years ago, where she performed even as a young girl.

“I’ve been on the stage since I was three-and-a-half, so I always knew the stage was calling for me,” said Megan who started on the stage dancing.

Then one day she picked up a guitar that had been left abandoned at her mother’s house, and started strumming.

“My mum asked if I wanted to take lessons. I’m so lucky – she’s always been so supportive”

Megan has taken the lessons her own mother taught her and wants to be an inspiration for her own children.

“I wanted to prove to my children that if you want to do something, you can. It’s lovely that they get to see that mum has a passion for something, and she’s actually doing something with that.”

And with that in mind, she reached out to local Orange recording studio, Dotted Eight, determined to record a song for her children to listen to, if – heaven forbid – anything ever happened to her. Her collaboration with Dotted Eight proved fruitful, with studio owner Craig Honeysett co-writing ‘I Just Want To Be’ with Megan.

“I knew legacy-wise I just wanted to leave them something, so if anything happened to me before I got old they’d be able to see their mum singing.”

Megan says you will be seeing a whole lot more of her — and in more places. Megan is working towards her dream of touring Australia, sharing her music wherever she can.

“Our goal as a family is to travel around Australia with the kids, and the puppy dog, and their mum will play in little pubs and clubs around Australia.”
