Orange’s Contemporary Homes are building on their reputation for quality and innovation, scooping five major industry gongs at the Master Builders Association (MBA) NSW Western Regions Excellence in Building Awards.

Contemporary Homes directors Michael and Kelli Paddison and Ken and Sue Barber were kept on their feet at the black-tie gala presentation night at the Orange Ex-Services Club on February 11, receiving awards for best contract home $450,000 to $550,000, best exhibition/display home $350,000 to $450,000, best exhibition/display home over $450,000, best bathroom and best kitchen.

“We have won at previous awards but never scored something like this before,” said Contemporary Homes director Michael Paddison.

“The Western Region, it takes in a fair population of builders and so to be recognised from among them by our peers and industry body the Master Builders Association is pretty special.”

The Master Builders Association Awards look to recognise best practice in residential and commercial building and reward outstanding workmanship and innovation. The judging process is conducted through onsite visits to all the entered builds and decided on quality of construction, design challenges, use of materials, value for money and innovation.

Contemporary Homes’ two award-winning display homes on Shiralee Road both boast clever design features and showcase a wide range of inclusions

The Claremont 32 (winner of the best exhibition/display home $350,000 to $450,000) is a four-bedroom family home with a nod to a “Hampton” style.

“It is a home that we've built many times before and it is such a clever designed plan,” said Michael. “It is a really warm, inviting and very liveable family home that has everything you need and a nice feel about it. It is just laid out so well and it ticks a lot of boxes just through perfect design and I feel that is why the judges were so positive about it.”

The Palm Cove (winner of the best exhibition/display home over $450,000, best bathroom and best kitchen) is a feature-rich luxury build that pushes boundaries with its innovative design, use of materials and building methods.

“ A lot of our clientele were telling us they were sick of going to display homes and seeing the same regurgitated ideas and very similar homes and designs everywhere so we thought, well, we'll change that,” said Michael.

“It was the ensuite to the Palm Cove, which won best bathroom, that was the inspiration for the whole house. We knew we wanted this cast stone round bath, a floor-to-ceiling shower screen sitting behind it and a massive VELUX skylight to let all this natural light in. That was the inspiration and straight away we knew we were onto something special.

“And the kitchen that won it is something out of this world; it's just showing off! The cabinetry, the high-end appliances and inclusions — it is an absolutely stunning kitchen and you discover new details every time look at it.”

But it is the quality of construction that is a particular point of pride for Contemporary Homes said Michael, and that comes from building a team of good people.

“We have been trading for 13 years and since the start, I’ve wanted to bring together a team of the best and the guys we have we handpicked them all,” Michael explained.

“When you have the best team, then they all hold each other to account and they want to step it up and the level; the quality in our homes is high because of that.

“I tell everyone to come through and judge us, judge us on quality; because it doesn't matter your budget, whether you are spending $100,000 with us or a million with us, it is the same suppliers the same tradesmen and still me building it — the guys that built our award winning homes will build yours as well. So you can come and see how good they are and that's what you can expect from a Contemporary Homes-built home.”

While confident in the product and service Contemporary Homes provides their clients, Michael said receiving awards such as these from the peak industry body means a lot and is a real tribute to his teams’ skill and diligence in their work.

“The MBA is an amazing body does a lot for the industry and to win those awards and to be recognised is something that we are so honoured and grateful for,” he said.

“And what it does is let us know we are on the right path. It lets all our guys know and all our trades and all the suppliers and all the professional services know that we are doing the right thing, we are going the right way about things

“They don't get always the recognition of seeing the house finished and the client enjoying the home or see what it does for those families and all the memories they make in their new home, but our industry body giving them recognition for what they are doing — especially when they put their heart and soul into these homes— is a nice little pat on the back for them and well deserved.”

We've grown our business very successfully from our home office and we've never really needed the display home before, but it is just brilliant now to have something physical to show people. We find a lot of people are very tactile, they like to come in to touch and feel and this way it allows clients to imagine themselves in these spaces. The best thing for me Michael added “it showcases what we can do and instills confidence and sets a level of expectation of exactly what our clients will expect from a build with Contemporary Homes”
