Just for a bit of fun and bragging rights

Local businesses to go head-to-head in new social bowls comp

The Orange City Bowling Club is calling for local businesses to nominate a team for their new Thursday night social bowls competition.

Starting next month Business House Bowls is a not-too-serious eight-week bowls competition that will see teams of three battle it out for bragging rights and the inaugural Business House Bowls trophy.

It doesn’t matter if you have even picked up a bowl before, said club director Mick Doyle, the competition is just a fun way to introduce people to the game.

“Bowls is an interesting game, it is a challenge and quite often that bowl just doesn’t go where you want it to, but it is a lot of fun and you have lots of giggles on the green,” said Mick.

“That's what we are trying to give to these people — a bit of fun and I'm pretty sure once people get a little experience doing it they are going to want to come back and do some more bowling.”

The Club has bowls for teams to use (all regularly cleaned and COVID safe) and free coaching is also available. All that is required is flat-soled shoes, but even thongs or bare feet will do.

“It will be good fun!” said Mick. “We are hoping that businesses will see it as an opportunity for staff to meet Thursday night after work, have a bit of fun on the greens, maybe have a drink or two and relax, just have a good time prior to the weekend.”

The introduction of the Business House Bowls competition is part of a new focus on family-friendly activities for the club. Following their members rejection of a proposed amalgamation with the Orange Ex-Services Club, Orange City Bowling Club is looking to expand its regular activities.

“Some years ago, Business House Bowls was one of our popular events it was a suggestion from some of our members that we try to resurrect it,” said Mick.

“We are getting a lot of member suggestion for what they think the club should do and how we can do it…a few fresh ideas which will hopefully add to a bit more variety.

“Kids play equipment is something we are looking at. We have twilight bowls every Wednesday. Putt putt golf has been popular over the holiday. We are just trying to give the club more of a family focus, more things for kids to do when they come here with Mum and Dad.

“And in the longer term we are looking at getting more school kids involved and looking at ways we can attract more people to the game. I'm a fairly inexperienced bowler, but I enjoy it and for that reason I suppose I'm keen to see other people come and enjoy it as well.”

The Busines House Bowls competition will run from February 4 to 25 March with team nominations closing 28 January.

“We will have a trophy that they can take back to their office and with the trophy goes the bragging rights until the next event, so it'll be a bit of fun,” said Mick

“It will hopefully be a biannual event and it may be that if people like the challenge they may take up bowls a little bit more seriously.”
