Blue-green algae warning for Lake Canobolas and Gosling Creek Dam

High levels of blue-green algae have been detected at both Lake Canobolas and Gosling Creek Dam.

Blue-green algae potentially contains toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Even if you cannot physically see the algae in the water that does not mean it is safe to go in as there are often no changes in the colour of the water.

Do not eat fish from the affected areas and to keep pets out of direct contact with contaminated water.

If you come into contact with the contaminated water you may experience skin rashes, itchiness, sore ears, eyes and throat, asthma, numbness of lips, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Warning signs have been placed in highly visible spots at both locations.

Blue-green algae thrives off hot weather and still water and just how long the blue-green algae will remain at high levels is unknown as it is dependent on a number of factors including nutrient levels, temperature, water turbidity and the amount of sunlight or cloud cover.
