“Who likes to go fast,” *everyone raises their hand* “Excellent, we are going to have fun later,” retired Australian champion cyclist, Mark Renshaw smiled.

St Joseph’s Blayney had a special visitor last week as they hosted a Bike and scooter Road safety day for the students.

Mark Renshaw now lives in Bathurst with his family after retiring from professional cycling in 2019.

Principal Mrs Kerrie Basha said the students were very excited to have an ex-student coming back to visit them.

“We often talk about history, and this year in particular we feel like we’ve made lots of history with the changes in the world and in education.”

“So to have a prominent figure come back to visit us and spend time with the children is very exciting for both staff and students,” said Kerrie.

Students took the opportunity to ride to school and some even took their bikes/scooters on the bus with them.

“Its another great opportunity for the students where we are intent on providing lifelong learning and an education that centres around what they require to live a safe, happy and responsible life,” said Kerrie.

Mark spoke to students about his experience as an professional athlete at the top of his game and the importance of bike safety, both on and off the road and took them through some practical activities and bicycle maintenance tips.

“We’ve seen a massive increase in cycling and kids riding their bikes during COVID,” said Mark, “Which means there’s a lot more kids on bikes and adults on bikes. So, it’s really important to make kids aware of what they should and shouldn’t do on the bike.”

“The other thing is that its really nice to come back to the school I was at as a young kid, to talk about my career and what you can do in cycling with your career, to keep the kids motivated and give them some aspirations.”

Students enjoyed an afternoon riding their bikes around the school as Mark reinforced the importance of wearing helmets, following basic safety rules whilst riding and keeping your bike or scooter in good working order with regular maintenance checks.
