Orange locals join global climate strike action
Hundred of locals took part in a protest in Robertson Park last Friday afternoon demanding our political leaders take action to limit the impact of human-caused climate change.
The protest was part of a world-wide strike movement being led by school children, and representative from a number of local schools took part along with other concerned citizens of all ages.
The young protest leaders demanded a stop to new coal, oil and gas projects along with a push to 100% renewable energy generation.
One of the young protest organisers, 16-year-old Lara O'Brien said she was protesting as her future depended on it.
“I just want to point out to adults that the reason this is largely a kid’s movement is that it is more so our future than theirs. A lot of our teachers, our parents, they aren't going to be around to see the most devastating effects of climate change, but we will be!” said Lara.
Protestors also lined up to sign a petition calling on Orange City Council to declare a climate emergency.
