Mustang prize for Al’s big golfing day

Al Gordon loved his golf.

So it is fitting that one of the biggest golf days of the year will be held in his honour at Wentworth in October.

For lovers of American muscle cars, there’s also an extra incentive to sign-up for this wonderful charity day; an American latest-model classic sports car from a local dealer.

“We started it two years ago, and last year it went big,” Al’s son Brett, co-organiser of the Al Gordon Memorial Golf Day said.

“This year, we went hell for leather with a Ford Mustang from Tony Leahy Ford,” Brett said excitedly. “There’ll be a car there on the day, anyone who gets the hole in one on the 13th hole, they get their free Mustang,” he explained.

Brett said that the event was to raise funds for a charity close to the family’s heart after the passing of the much-loved local golfer.

“We tried to do it in honour of my father, he was a well-known local golfer” Brett said. “We use it to raise money for charities including the Cancer Council.” He explained.

“This year though, all money raised will go to Palliative Care,” he added. “Palliative Care was so helpful in the last four months of my father’s life… in all honesty, we couldn’t have done it without them,” Brett said with heart-felt gratitude.

“We’re also grateful for the support of the local business community, there’s quite a few who have helped and who are providing sponsorship on the day,” he added.

Supporters of the day have been many, varied, and exceedingly-generous. They include Contemporary Homes who are sponsors of the event, the Robin Hood Hotel, Kiteley’s Roofing, and McGrath Estate Agents.

Other major sponsors include Empire Strength, Canobolas Auto One, the Wentworth Pro Shop, Connaughton landscape solutions, Mitre 10, Hayjack Painting, and PSC insurance brokers, and Cadia Mines.

But Brett pointed-out that the two-person Ambrose event is about having fun as well as doing good deeds.

“As well as the hole-in-one prize, there’s a barbecue beforehand and the players can have a bit of a drink with a presentation afterwards,” Brett explained.

The current situation with COVID-19 is also being factored into the Friday, October 22 event with golf providing one of the safest outdoor activities you can engage in during these anxious times.

“We’ll be practising social distancing throughout and the whole event will be COVID-safe,” Brett concluded.
