Local musician Justin Landers wins country music award
“This is the first award I have actually won – I am so pleased and humbled to receive this award”
Not so long-ago Orange City Life was speaking with singer-songwriter Justin Landers about the launch of his second album. Now we’ve caught up with the local country muso again chatting about his first award win at the Dusty Boots Festival in Narromine recently.
“I won the Ken Pritchard Memorial Dusty Boot Award for Services to country music. I have been nominated for a Dusty Boot Award now for 3 years running.
This is the first award I have actually won – I am so pleased and humbled to receive this award,” Justin explained.
Over the years, Justin has been fortunate in receiving both nominations and finalist recognition in various country music industry award ceremonies, however, never bagging a win.
Finally, after years of passion, persistence, and hard work, Justin wins his first award; perhaps one of the most important. The significance of winning the Dusty Boot Award means industry representatives within country music are watching Justin’s career and following his musical journey.
“It was incredible to be announced as a winner this year. It came as quite a shock, but it is nice to be recognised for what I bring to country music,” Justin says.
The Dusty Boots Festival and the associated award is the brainchild of Mr. Johnny Norton, a prominent country music figure who wanted to honour people across the country music industry for their service to the genre. From artists, roadies, photographers, radio announcers, volunteers, to all who dedicate their time and efforts to the industry sector.
Mr. Norton passed away in 1983 and the dream is now being kept alive by his son Mal Norton. Justin states, “In Johnny’s words, ‘From the legends to the roots.’ The award carries the names of the founding Orana Country Music Association members who have long since passed and are awarded for services to country music.”
During this year’s festival, Justin got to perform on the same stage as independent heavyweights such as Ben Ransom and Kevin Sullivan. Justin said it was an honour performing on stage with the Westerneers (which is the name given to the backing band for the festival as a tribute to Johnny Norton’s original band).
To Justin sharing the stage with some of the industry’s best musicians including Greg Franks, Shane Saffy, Lance Birrell, and Brett Graham.
“I had so much fun, I can’t wait till next year’s festival,” Justin expressed gleefully.
