Union Bank owners Nick and Emma Bacon, and the UB’s Head Chef Hugh Mawter, have made the big decision to open a new establishment at 224 Anson Street, once the site of the Standard Hotel.

“It was just too great of a chance to pass up,” said Nick Bacon. “The bones of the place are fantastic; the old girl just needs some love. We know the long history and the more recent history and we acknowledge both, but The Lord Anson will be nothing like anything this building has previously been.”

The Bacons and Hugh hope The Lord Anson Public House will be Orange’s answer to the traditional English pub, offering a cosy, relaxed and sophisticated place for guests to enjoy an extensive craft beer selection, a menu modelled on classic English fare and a concise but interesting wine list.

“Good food, cold beer and friendly service”, said Emma, “We don’t want to re-invent the wheel”.

Hoping to open within the next six weeks, Nick, Emma and Hugh are working with their current team to perfect the ground level facilities, the back area will be closed off to patron “for the moment” with plans for remodelling of both the back and upstairs areas being kept under wraps.

“We have some plans for both areas, but for now we just want to get this area right. We can worry about the rest as the place develops”, said Nick.

When asked on what patrons can expect from the kitchen, Hugh was happy to share, “We intend on serving that traditional pub food, sticking to the English theme of The Lord Anson, but of course with a fresh twist”.

“We want The Lord Anson to become the locals, local”, said Emma. “The Lord Anson will have a range of dedicated areas for people to experience, from those wanting to enjoy a quiet chat over a nice bottle, to those who want to have a cold one whilst they enjoy the footy”.
